Title page and passage from an essay delivered at the Sheldonian theatre in Oxford in 1837. In 1959, the author, Piers Calveley Claughton [1814-1884] became the first Anglican bishop of St. Helena, an island in the South Atlantic Ocean. St. Helena was claimed by the East India Company in 1657, and is currently one of the fourteen British Overseas Territories.
