Edward Pococke (1604-1691) became the first Laudian Professor of Arabic at Oxford University. This title page is from a Latin translation by Pococke of excerpts of a history of the Arabs by Bar Hebraeus (Al-Faraji). Pococke is credited as a major contributor to the development of the study of Arabic in England.
